Advice for the NICU

I just finished my first year in the nursing program at MSU, and this summer I have an externship in a neonatal intensive care unit. Anyone have advice about working with tiny newborns and their families? Thanks!

families really appreciate being empowered to act independantly in their babies’ care. i think its silly when parents have to ask permission to wake up and change their child’s diaper… you don’t need a nursing degree to do that! and you certainly don’t need my permission! our job is to enable them to be as involved in their baby’s care as they want to be… make them feel involved and included and they’ll love you for it!

They aren’t glass. Don’t be afraid to get hands on.

Thanks guys! I’ve been doing my externship in the NICU for 4 weeks now, and it’s going great. I’ve definitely realized the importance of letting the parents do the basics like changing diapers and taking temperatures. it lets them feel involved in the care of their child.
