Fired during orientation/7 weeks in

I worked at a hospital for 2 1/2 years as an NA with no issues/writeups/problems. Once I received my RN, i was hired on a floor. On the last day with one of my preceptors, I was told to do things that were unethical and illegal. (giving meds without scanning them or the patient, giving insulin coverage when the trays were not on the floor). I stated continuously that I was not comfortable doing this, but was told "we all do it and its no big deal" and yelled at for questioning her. I went along with it, hoping to speak to someone during the week about this (it was a weekend with no admin/nurse educators/management in, of course). The following day I was let go due to my being"disrespectful" to my preceptor and telling her what to do, not asking. I am still stunned. I have no union recourse, as I was on probation. Any suggestions?

I would go to human resources after you write this to your board of nursing. It is true that these things happen and it is because we all get lazy but you are the one who is being told to do things that are unethical and ultimately will be the one responsible. I had this problem also not at one job but sadly at almost every job. I was told during my phlebotomy training that I change my gloves too often (between patients) i never went back to that job. I was asked to sign trip sheets (forge them using the name mickey mouse and Donald duck so the ambulance could get paid. (i didn’t do it) I got fired, I was told to drive the school bus i rejected during pre-trip inspections, and i am afraid if i do get my RN the same thing will happen but–I will NEVER do anything unethical and you should never do it either. Senior nurses need to stop the jealous , hate, b*tch attitude and learn to take newbie nurses under their wing like firefighters do with their “brotherly” love. not all but most nurses are miserable and mean to newbies and that’s nationwide. That has to change, they eat their young!!! they have a bad rep. The place that you will see nurses who are more human is in the ER. I would find a way to move in that direction because for the most part, they are REAL nurses and work together as a team. don’t ever change who you are–you keep your head up high and do the right thing!! you are the one whos license is on the line–report it!

I meant the next level up then if you are not satisfied, try human resources, bring something in writing that shows what you’re being asked to do is clearly not your protocol that’s written down here and explain that this is unethical. (you can even play dumb and ask “am I being tested because if so, I don’t understand why i’m no longer on that floor)
