This blog, http://www.travelrngab.com/, is a great place to start. It is a blog by a first time traveler about his experience. Forums also have a ton of experienced travelers who can offer advice. My biggest piece of advice though is just to do what you are you doing and make sure it is really something you want to do, it is not for everyone. Travel nursing takes someone who is confident yet willing to learn and being outgoing and flexible are also important traits to have.
I did 2 travel assignments working in Cardiovascular Recovery. I found that staff nurses were grateful I was there to help and were very kind to me. You do have to be confidant in what you know and willing to make friends for a short time. I used the opportunity to explore new places on my days off. You can find lots of information about a location online these days.
A tip, be sure you read over your contract closely to make sure it includes mention of what you agreed to verbally such as end of assignment bonuses and such.
I wish you good luck and have fun!
