Professionalism: Accepting/Rejecting a Job

Hello,
I have a situation I could use some advice with.
Today I had my 2nd interview with a long-term care facility. It's for a part-time position with no benefits but is very close to where I'm presently living with my parents. The interview went quite well.
I also have an interview scheduled this Friday with a large tertiary care center a few hours away in their med-surg dept. It's a full-time position with benefits.
I eventually would like to work on a L&D floor so I can get some good experience to go to nurse-midwifery school. I am very passionate about women's health and birthing. I feel that a position in a medical center would make it easier to get onto an L&D unit once I get some more floor nursing experience.
My problem is that 1) in this economy any job offer is a valuable one. I've had quite a few interviews that have not ended in hires. 2) If the LTC facility wants to hire me, is there an appropriate way to ask them to wait until I find out from the medical center whether I got in there? 3) I really do like the LTC facility and if they were hiring me for full-time with benefits I wouldn't hesitate to take it.

I'm just not sure what to say to the DON at the LTC facility if she calls and offers me a job. Please any advice would be much appreciated.

I am in the same predicament, except I just got the call from my “backup” facility this morning…

I said, thank you very much, I am very interested in the position, when do you need a commitment by? I explained that I would not be able to make a commitment until next week (I did not give a reason) – although I am sure they are aware that we (as new graduates) are exploring all our options. It takes a lot of guts to tell a job offer to wait, but if you know what you really want to do, it will be worth it to pursue your first choice.

…of course you could also just not answer your phone for the rest of the week, in hopes of prolonging the inevitable, something I thought of after my conversation… 😉

I hope this helps and I look forward to hearing other input. Good luck!
