ER to Cath Lab?

I have been an RN for one year, working in a very busy, high acuity ED outside of Washington DC. I already have PALS and ACLS, and am going back to school to obtain my BSN. Once that is complete I am going to sit for my CEN exam.

I really enjoy ED nursing, but am beginning to think of my long-term goals as well. I eventually want to enroll in a Master's program for Emergency/Trauma/Critical Care Nursing that would give me a dual certification as ACNP and CNS.

I love ED but want to expand my horizons w/ some Cath lab, ICU or PACU experience, but is it too soon to add that? Should I stick w/ just ED for another year or so to get a really good base?

Too Soon; if you want to go the route you outlined, you probably should do some more time in the ED. Keep the ambition going with education. I was once enthusiastic about it, but family, kids and greed eventually made me complacent enough to just stay where I was.

Yeah, I have decided to stay in ED for at least another 2 years. I want to feel pretty comfortable in my own skin as a nurse before I begin moonlighting in a different specialty. I know “Experienced nurses” don’t get much orientation.
