Nursing student with misdemeanor theft charge

I am a 28 year who just got accepted into a nursing program in Louisiana. I was arrested for misdemeanor theft in 2001. Due to my lack of knowledge on being arrested I didn't know that when I didn't receive a subpoena for court that I would have an attachment on me. I thought the case was closed. I recently started gathering information from the charge for the board of nursing and found out the case is still open. I am in the process of getting a new court date. I need to know, if one any can help how will this affect me getting into the nursing program? Will it be possible for me to get into the program with this charge still open?

You should contact your state board of nursing, they will be the factor in determining your eligibility and can answer any questions pertaining to outstanding charges.

I would contact a lwayer immediately and discuss this. This is a very complicated situation and you may have recourse with the school and BON that a lawyer could sort out-contact the BON as rustychain says and also contact the state nurses’ association to find a lawyer skilled in these issues. Good luck

I am also a certified legal nurse consultant. I am speaking from experience when I say that even if you finish nursing school, the board of nursing will do a background check on you and you may not even be issued a license.

I would solve this problem first, before I even wasted money with nursing school. Be sure to pick a lawyer that deals with medical professionals specifically and not just any lawyer. A lot of times lawyers are more apt to make deals then to care about “YOU” as a person. You don’t want to have a record if you can help it.

Think about it, “misdemeanor theft charge” even if you get a license, what potential employer would hire you. You may steal medication, the way the potential employer.

Now, if you already have this on your record, I believe it stays on your record for 5 years? Not really sure about that. You can read more here:
