60 year old Registered Nursing Student?

How old is to old to enter an RN program. The hook is that I am a male and male nurses are only 5% of the nursing profession. Am I swimming up hill only to hit a Hover type Dam?

PLEASE do try to get into school if you really want to be a nurse and are healthy. 60 is the new 30. I remember a student in my class (30 years ago) who was in her early 60s when she went to nursing school. She had always wanted to be a nurse and her husband forbade it. When he died, she went to school. She worked productively until she was almost 80. My sister completed nursing school 2 years ago at the age of 54. Virginia Henderson continued to travel and lecture until she was almost 90. Age is not only NOT a barrier, the good school will welcome you with open arms. You go GUY! Do it!

Hi Peter, I just graduated from nursing school this summer (yay!) and there was a guy in my class who was 60 years old when we started so I guess he will be 62 now. He did awesome and we all loved having him in the class. Patients responded well to him in clinicals. He brings so much life experience to the position.

I hope that if you want to do this, that you go for it. Also, as far as the gender issue goes, 25% of my class is male and about 40% of the nurses on my floor are male. I think the face of the typical nurse is changing.

    Best of luck!
    Jo

    Peter,
We need male nurses in our profession. I graduated from the RN program at the age of 47 and just received my master’s degree at the age of 51. We are never to old to learn. Just take care of your back and feet.

Go for it! It’s never too late to follow your dreams! Especially one as noble as nursing 🙂

I finished nursing school at 51 and have continued practising at age 71. I love what I do and wish you all the best in your chosen vocation. As for male nurses, most all clients LOVE male nurses. Men bring a different perspective to our profession and we need and love all of you. Good luck!

I say GO FOR IT. There are so many different career paths within nursing that you won’t be limited by physical strength especially if you are healthy!

There are so many positions which require nursing to be at the desk–researching, immunizations, providing assistance to special needs.

It is an exciting profession and I believe you will love it and wish you had started sooner!

    Congratulations!

    Age is a number.

The brain it thirsty for knowledge and the body is capable of learning.

A person must be motivated to accomplish their goals. If this is your goal, go for it and if not, find the goal you can accomplish.

Do not doubt yourself, predict the barriers ahead and question your abilities to prevent a successful accomplishment.

Go for it, you will be an asset to the nursing profession and the patients. You will find a position in the career of nursing. Stand tall, hold your head high and walk into the boot camp with your nursing peers for two years of reshaping, learning and understanding the policies of safe practice for patients.

You will add another type of learning, student and most of all, caring to the nursing program.

Sorry, nursing classes are boot camp…Lucky you are not in the hospital base nursing school. OMG. You are in marine boot camp. College was nothing compare hospital base nursing school.

Oh hell, if an 58 yr old, is in Physician Assistant school…You can do it in Nursing School.

Come on and join the rewarding career and caring for those who are in need. Don’t worry about the politics.

Just do not let them walk over you like a sidewalk and choose your battles to win the war.

    Good luck…
