I am a senior nursing student in Illinois. I want to move to Oregon when I graduate. I am LOST--and my school is not being helpful. Where do I take my NCLEX? Should I take it in Illinois or Oregon? How do I get licensed in two states while taking only one exam. Can someone PLEASE help??? Thanks.

I’m not positive b/c I began practicing in the state where I took the NCLEX, however later I did obtain a license for Arizona by applying directly to that state, and I did NOT have to re-take the NCLEX. (takes some time to go through, and was expensive though) Here is some general info from the NCLEX website about applying. They have more details re: the process if you are interested on their website…
How to Register for the NCLEX Examination
1. Candidates must submit an application for licensure to the board of nursing where they wish to be licensed. Candidates must be sure to meet that board of nursing’s application deadline.
2. Candidates who provide an e-mail address when registering for the NCLEX Examination will receive all subsequent correspondence from Pearson VUE only through e-mail. If a candidate does not provide an e-mail address when they register then all correspondence from Pearson VUE will arrive only through U.S. mail.
3. Candidates need to register using one of the following methods: on the web, by mail or by telephone.
Registering on the Internet
1. Go to the NCLEX Candidate Web site (www.pearsonvue.com/nclex) and select the “Create a Web Account and register” option. Answer each question as directed. Use the Candidate Bulletin (PDF 740k) as a guide to answering the questions.
2. Candidates must pay for their registration by credit card, using one of the following: VISA, MasterCard or American Express. Candidates should have their credit card ready when they begin their internet registration.

Emily,
I recommend that you take the NCLEX and get certified in Oregon. Illinois is one of the most difficult states to get certified due to the numerous extra steps that are required. I live in Illinois but have a job out west as well. The hospital that I will work for recommended that I take the NCLEX elsewhere because it takes a lot less time to get your license. I hope this helps!

I looked into this as well because I am getting my license in Florida, but may want to move to a different state. You can file with each Board of Nursing and some let you get what’s called License by Endorsement. You just meet the CEU requirements of the state and know your scope of practice per that state. Good Luck!

I’m currently in Florida, and I plan on working in the Midwest. What I’m planning on doing is just taking the exam in the state I’m moving to. Unless someone thinks this is a bad idea.
Licensing is a real pain.

I also am a senior nursing student, and my suggestion is to have your school send your graduation info to the board of nursing in Oregon. It makes no sense to get licensed in Illinois if you are not planning to practice there. If you are planning on traveling on short term travel assignments, then that is a different story– you would take the NCLEX then apply for licensing with the board of nursing in the state you will be practicing in short term. If you cannot get any guidance from your school, I would also suggest contacting the Oregon board of nursing and speak with them.
Best of luck.
