I'm just wondering if anyone went back to school after having a degree in another field? Was it what you expected, do you have any regrets? I guess my biggest fear is to go back and then become an RN and realize it wasn't what I expected and regret it.I have started thinking about nursing and have job shadowed a little and I know I would like it - but the time to go back to school, the money lost - I'm just wondering if its worth it. Sometimes I just wonder if I can find something that will fulfill me with my current degree in marketing. SInce I graduated college a few years ago I have had a couple jobs and they just aren't "me". My main goal is to help people. I know nursing was never on my mind in college - I just never thought of it as a profession - now I really respect nurses. They have to know and care so much!

I found your site on technorati and read a few of your other posts. Keep up the good work. I just added your RSS feed to my Google News Reader. Looking forward to reading more from you.

Hey Jen – I am a second degree nursing student, and I love it. My program is only 14 months long, but there are other programs that are even shorter and only take 12 months to complete. It is a lot of work, but it is so worth the effort. I have found that the other 2nd degree students really bond together and work hard to make sure that we all succeed. Nurses love to take care of people, and that includes each other!
As far as being without income, there are a lot of options. Five of my fellow students applied for a work-scholarship with a local hospital, and all five were accepted. They received $20,000 for school-related expenses, anything from gas money to rent to tuition – whatever was needed to help them get through school (within reason). In exchange, they are required to work for this hospital for 4 years. Not a bad deal, if you ask me!
I have also been able to work during my program. We were encouraged to make school our main focus and quit any jobs we had currently, but my job is as a CNA and I only work on a PRN basis, so it fits in very well with my school schedule. I don’t earn a lot of money, but every little bit helps!
If you are thinking about nursing, I would encourage you to research 2nd degree or accelerated BSN programs online. If there is one in your area, meet with a school counselor and find out more information. It can’t hurt to ask! Hope this helps 🙂
