Work Repayment/Tuition Reimbursement

I am graduating in December 2008 with my RN-BSN; however, after doing some research I realize the program I was "banking" on to pay my loans back has vanished. Any ideas where to get my loans paid for and I am not holding the check? Most hospitals I have found will pay for my masters or future education not just past.

You may not be able to find a hospital to pay off your old student loans, but you might find one that offers a nice sign-on bonus. Some departments within a hospital offer larger sign-on bonuses than other departments, so be flexible in where you are willing to work. Hope this helps!

I just graduated in December as well with my BSN, so I feel your financial pain. The only employer I found that would repay my student loans was the VA hospital. I don’t know of any non-government facility that offers this. It is a matching program where I pay the student loans all year long but at the end of the year, the government matches my investment up to a certain dollar amount. (I could choose to pocket this money and consider it a payback, but I’ve chosen to pump this “payback” right back into my student loans which will allow me to pay them off twice as fast.) However you look at it, I’ll be the only student in my class that kills over $50,000 of student loans in 5 years or less.

The only downfall to this option is that I’m not 100% happy with the ward I work on. I had several amazing internship opportunities in the critical care environment but felt it more important (for now) to get out of this enormous school debt I have. So, it is somewhat of a toss up. Take the job you’ve always dreamed of right out of school or settle for something a little less intriguing and reap the financial benefits.

I hope you find what you’re looking for and enjoy your new career.
