an aggressive and unprofessional classmate who plans to work on your unit? I have a situation now where I have accepted my dream first job, and a classmate of mine is applying to work on the same unit as I will be. She thinks that we are very good friends, which we're not! I'm afraid that her unprofessional behaviors would impact me negatively because she thinks that we're such good friends. I would be so embarrassed if anyone thought that I was ANYTHING like this girl...What do I do? I have my dream first job and I'm afraid she's going to ruin it for me...

Some of the best advice I’ve gotten is “The only person whose behavior you’re responsible for is your own”. Just remember that if you both end up working together. You cannot control her behavior, but you can present yourself as a professional, kind, responsible nurse. And given time, your fellow co-workers will recognize that you are different from her and will appreciate it!

I would agree with the above response and just add that while you can be friendly with colleagues who are less than professional, you can also choose not to participate in their unprofessional behavior. People often get sucked into that type of behavior and start acting the same way. At times, it can feel like you are the only one choosing a different way which is never comfortable, but it will be worth it in the end to do what you know is right and professional despite the behavior around you!

I hope you are complaining because this colleague is indeed aggressive, mean, and unsafe(in which case, why is she getting hired?), and not because you are just snotty. I’ve seen this alot in nursing school and it’s time for nursing students to get off their high horses.

I am certainly saying this in all honesty. This colleague is consistently late, unsafe in her practices (late with meds, not competent in her assessments, trying to do the least she has to do to get by) and unprofessional. She dresses very provocatively and unprofessionally (lots of cleavage and thongs showing). She has fake eyelashes at least 1 inch long.
