DUI 5 and 18 Years Ago- Can I Be an LPN?

Hi everyone,
I'm so glad I found this site- it's so informative! I am a 38 year old mother of 2, currently working on my GED. I have a long road ahead but my plan is to get my GED, take a CNA class, study for my math/english placement testing at my local community college, apply for financial aid- and if I get accepted to nursing school, do a 40 week fulltime course to become an LPN. I will work about 15 hours a week as a CNA while in school, as I can't afford to not work.
My question of the moment is... I had a DUI (driving while intoxicated) charge in 2003. It is "unclassified" in Massachusetts, but a misdemeanor in most other states. I attended the alcohol education program and had my license back in 60 days. And, back in 1989, I also got a DUI in New Hampshire. I went to a program in NH for that.
Those were two mistakes that are very embarassing to me, and will not be repeated. I'm not an alcoholic and have maybe 2 dinks a year. I was just going through some wild times back then. But will this make it impossible for me to get my LPN license? Should I contact the MA Nursing Board for info? I just don't want to follow my dream, only to find that it can't be achieved due to my past stupidity.
Any advice? Thanks!
-Dee

I would contact your state nursing board. They can give you correct, accurate information.

Yes, you can. My advice – I had DUI II with in ten years and had some circumstances behind it and what ever the reason it is stupidity and I learned my lesson and was honest with myself – we all make mistakes – the board may ask you to submit into a recovery program at your expense.
I obtained a lawyer and prior had recovery therapy prior to applying and fought the request and turned down going into the program based on the fact I did treatment and had letters from professionals I was safe to practice and the attorney got my license for me with no restrictions and been in good standing ever since with great job references and I am a great nurse. I fought my case and I have been in good standing ever since. They cannot deny you the right to practice, they have to at least give you an option of treatment. You need to fight your case, the worst case scenario – they would try to get you into a contract at your expense that consists of meetings, urine drops at the most a three year contract with a pled that first being a new nurse – I could not afford and I did enough work on myself and I did and was honest with it all and with the help of an attorney, I won my case. By honest with yourself is my best advice. If you feel like you might be a risk, then go into the program they want and help yourself now and realize the consequences of your actions and what it may have on your career. If you have finally come to that realization and are serious – do not let anyone stand in the way. Fight for that right – you just might come out better than you thought. Everyone goes through something in their life – just come out of it wiser and stronger.
