VA Hospitals

I will be graduating in August and my mother-in-law has suggested that I apply for VA hospital positions. Does anyone have some experiences (good or bad) that they could share? Also, I was wondering about their loan repayment program. Any info would be much appreciated!

The VA system has improved immeasurably over the last 20 years. Nurse practitioners provide an enormous amount of the care and there is good coordination of services within the facility. The pay tends to be a little less than other facilities but the benefits are fabulous. There are also opportunities to transfer to other VAs around the country. The best ones to work in are the ones affiliated with major teaching hospitals. The experience and knowledge you will gain is unparalleled.

Don’t believe the money comment until you see it.

VA hospitals in most areas have locality pay, which means you get paid a reasonable amount adjusted for your location.

The pay for graduate nurses where I live is about $3 per hour more at the VA than at other hospitals. Don’t be surprised that in many areas hospitals all pay about the same.

The VA also has great shift differentials (10% of base) and double time for working any holidays. I worked for a private hospital, and unless it was Christmas, you only got paid $2 per hour more for a holiday. Double time is great!

The benefits are amazing: 26 days of vacation per year, 14 sick days, 10 Federal holidays and EDRP (debt repayment for your undergrad degree up to $40 for 5 years). You may have a hard time getting the vacation you want since it’s awarded in many units based on seniority, but check it out.

See your local VA nurse recruiter for more details.
