California Nursing

Hi everyone... whats it like to be a nurse in california??
I may have to move there right after I graduate
Someone told me its very hard to get a job as a nurse and to apply six months before you graduate because there are thirty applicants for each nursing position... very competitive etc...
This seems crazy to me. Here in texas I could go out and get a job the same day we are so short of nurses.

    Hey Carli,

Not true. There is a huge nursing shortage here in California just like everywhere else. Okay, if you’ve read my posts you know that I am about to leave my present job for travel nursing and am not happy at my hospital here in CA, but that is just my particular situation. I was initially hired within one week of applying online. They emailed me the next day asking me to set up an interview, I did it and was offered a position immediately. This is not uncommon. To search for jobs you could try several things: look on the http://www.campusrn.com website; google search CA nursing jobs, or go directly to the hospital websites. The law here in CA is that you can never have more than 5 patients, and in ICU it is 2 and sometimes 1 on 1 care if the patient is really sick. Just be very careful with the California Nurses Association (CNA), which is a union. Don’t, I repeat don’t sign anything saying they can take $ from your paycheck. I am trying to untangle a mess with that right now. The American Nurses Association chapter is ANA/CA. If you got good grades in nursing school (yes, that does matter when looking for a job you want as opposed to a job you have to settle for), and present yourself well during your interview, I bet you have more job offers than you know what to do with. Good luck.

It depends were you would be moving to. I know that San Diego has tons of positions open, esp. if you wouldn’t mind working for an agency.
