New Grad in Boston

Hello! I was hoping to gain some insight from some more seasoned nurses. I am in Boston and went to nursing school in CT. I have passed my boards and the only job offer I've gotten anywhere near the city is a psych position at McLean which is not originally what I had in mind but I'm thinking I might take the job and try it out for a while considering I don't have any other options. I've heard that apparently it's just getting worse for New Grads in the city. My concern is if this ends up being something I don't want to do forever if I would be a candidate for a different type of position, such as Pediatrics if I moved out of the city eventually. I know the shortage is affecting many other states more greatly, so I'm wondering if anyone has any advice they can offer.

Thanks so much!
Cait

I am curious, too (I posted a question regarding Boston-area hospitals, and the news isn’t good)! I can’t relocate d/t my husband’s job, so I am limited to within a 1 hour radius of Easton, MA (which includes Boston). I am graduating from a school in Indiana on August 2nd, so I still have time, but I am thinking that I will probably have to do what you are thinking about – take a job in an area that isn’t my first choice just so that I can have a job!

I did see that there was going to be a nursing fair with on-site job offers tomorrow (July 23rd) from 8am – 6pm for Kindred Hospital in Waltham. I cannot attend (still in Indiana), but if you can go, it might be worth it. Here is the link to the advertisement – http://img.travidia.com/imagehandler/fa-100336-20080713/236771

I don’t have any advice for you, but I feel you. It’s even worse for new grads on the left coast, so I’d say take your psych job and run with it! Good luck.
