BLS after ACLS?

The doctors I work with don't even have to take BLS. Why do nurses have to maintain their BLS certification after receiving ACLS and/or PALS?

There are two surveys requisite in ACLS:1. The BLS survey and 2. The ACLS survey.
Generally, the BLS survey always precedes the ACLS survey.
I won’t go into detail about the same. However, it is clear from the aforementioned, that you have to be competent in BLS to be competent in ACLS, given the aforementioned.
Further, many ACLS recertification courses, if not all, require that you have current BLS certification to take the course.

  2. Deb, soon to be RN Says:

when I was certified for ACLS I asked if I have to re-cert for BLS. They said yes. I guess the understanding is if youre not certified in the basics how can you be certified in the advanced. the basis of ACLS are ABC’s ACLs just adds ABCD (drugs). I was also told if I’m not certified in BLS then my ACLS doesn’t mean anything.

I don’t know, I guess it just seems overkill. If BLS is the secondary part of the ACLS survey then we should be able to certify BLS at the same time.
