New nurse needs help to find Med-Surg clinicals

I am a new RN, with a bachelors in nursing from India.

I have only one year of clinical experience in India.

Recently, I passed the RN exam in the U.S., and I got a job in a well established hospital. Now i am orienting, and I'm wondering whether there are any courses or programs in med-surg nursing that will help me with clinicals.

I am entirely new to the system, and I'd like to advance my career. Most certification classess or programs require at least two years experience.

Any advice would be greatly appreciated.

I teach nursing so thought I might offer some suggestions. I would suggest that you continue to work here in the U.S. and gather your experiences from “hands on” care followed up with a review of the care of special clinical cases. This review should have two dimensions: 1) discuss the case with senior nurses who you consider to experts; and, 2) use textbooks, journal articles, and other reliable resources to enhance you knowledge of the case at hand. In doing so, you will not only enhance your knowledge and skills about practice but will also be preparing yourself for certification in your area of interest. As far as certification goes, many organizations offer live or online certification preparation courses. That may be helpful as you approach certification. After attaining certification in your specialty, you should consider getting your masters degree. Good luck!
