Hi everyone... I am seeking some advice about a possible nursing career change. I am 53 years old and am about to do a practicum in counseling. I have been thinking though that I may want to change course here and become a psych nurse. (for the record I have always wanted to become a nurse but my high school chemistry teacher discouraged that) I know its late in the game. Do you think I should continue on and finish my masters degree in counseling and then go for nursing or change now or just finish what I am doing and forget nursing. I know I am too old to be second guessing myself. I just don't want to end up with huge student loans and no way to pay them back!
Thanks.

I graduated from nursing at 51! Follow your heart, how does it feel the idea of being a nurse vs. being a counsellor. Fact is as a nurse you do it all, including counseling. Which one lights you up. Go for the light. Also, many hospitals will pay for a big part of your nursing education if you work for them for 2 years. Then, you can move on into other areas of nursing including psych nursing, or who knows, maybe even start there, or become a nurse entrepreneur and create your dream job. Good luck. Again, go for the feeling, how you really want to serve in the world and make a difference…in you first, then for the greater good.

I worked in psych for 2 years, at the end I was in tears. I believe very much in dreams, and we ALL deserve a chance to attain our dreams (even if Nurse Instructors try to eliminate you). I also knew a Psych nurse that worked in Psych for years, she was always stressed horribly, I felt sorry for her. If you want to be in Psych, I would suggest just getting a Bachelors in Social Work. The title opens doors to lots of variety and career dynamics. Plus, when you come upon other Psych jerks (and you will, cause there are a lot out there, especially in Wash state), you can move-on. Good Luck.
