Nursing applicants these days are different from when I started. I can remember when I was a new RN and having difficulty finding a nursing job. I was frustrated because it seemed that everyone seemed to need experience before they even considered your application.
Eventually I managed to find work. Now I am a Director of Nursing and now I am dealing with problems "on the other side of the coin."
It seems to me that there is a lack of integrity of applicants. I was just notified by a nurse who accepted a job offer from me as a nurse that she is no longer interested in the position. May be I am old school, but if you accept a job you should be held to your word. I've already sent out letters telling other applicants that the position was filled based upon this person's acceptance of my job offer.
I had another situation in which a nurse actually came in to fill out employment papers, then later told me that she had accepted another position elsewhere.
What??? Are you kidding me???
So if you are wondering why some places hesitate to hire I can tell you that this type of behavior as I describe above is probably one of the reasons...
Just thought I would let you know how it is on the other side of the hiring process...
I can't believe this type of behavior is happening within the nursing profession.

Nothing to do with honor. It’s the same tactic that business applies to an applicant but in reverse.Three people come in for a job, all things being equal, you would hire the one that would work for less money.Just business, nothing more. Don’t take it personal. It’s an employers market so if an applicant can get a better deal can you really blame them?

To rondodondo: Then it should be okay for me to offer a job to someone and then tell that person the next day that I decided to hire someone else because another applicant came in and told me that he/she would work for less “all things being equal”??? How would you feel if you were the first applicant in this situation???
