From Army Combat Medic to ER Nurse

I am an Army Combat medic and am in my senior year of nursing. I would love to transition to an ER setting, since I have had a lot of Trauma and urgent care experience. Very few hospitals hire new grads into the ER, but it does happen on occasion. What should I expect when interviewing for an ER position? What do you think is the role of an ER nurse? Thanks for your help!

I wanted Ed too when I got out of school. I went to a city hospital and got a job on the night shift in the ED as a new grad. I saw it all within 2 years.

It is a great place to start and I suspect that anyplace would be thrilled to have someone like who who has demonstrated trauma and emergency skills in combat!… My one concern is that you may have some PTSD or flashbacks if you work in a major trauma center. Please be sure you have some counseling in place if needed! Best of luck-I’d hire you in a minute.

I worked in the ER all through nursing school as a PCT and loved it that is why after I finished nursing school that is where I stayed. I have found that ER’s will place the right new grad in an open slot in the ER, the push you off orientation just as soon as they think that you should be ready. I thought that I was ready but I did not know I wasn’t until I had been there about a year and a half and realized I was so green when I came off orientation. Good luck!
