Recommend a Hospital in Boston Area

My husband and I are moving to Massachusetts in 42 days - we just found out yesterday! Does anyone have recommendations on good hospitals for new grads in the Easton/Boston area? There are so many to choose from, and I do not have a lot of time. I would REALLY appreciate any suggestions! Thanks,

Jenny

you’ll probably have more luck right outside of boston. it is really hard to get a new graduate nursing job in boston unless you were a PCA (CNA) or precepted at one during nursing school. Add to it the current semi-hiring freeze in the area and you will have a bit of a hurdle. Try outside of Boston and you may have more luck.

You can learn a lot about a hospital in the Easton area by asking about staff turnover and staffing ratios. Also, don’t forget about public health/home nursing options. There are some terrific opportunities available that will not only help build your resume but also help you learn more about your community.

You might also contact the travel nurse companies and see if you can get a temporary assignment to a hospital in the area –

Thanks for the suggestions – I appreciate it! I did not realize there was a semi-hiring freeze, either, but that explains things. I had several interview offers within days of filling out applications in my current state, but have heard NOTHING from anyone in Massachusetts unless I called them and spoke with the nurse recruiter.

Not sure about other areas but in my area (north of Boston) new grad positions are hard to come by. For example one hospital had 233 applicants last year for an opening of 12 new grad positions. Good Luck-hope you find something you like.

    Hi Jenny,
I don’t mean to discourage you, but I have been job searching in Boston since February and have not even landed an interview yet. In fact, the only person that has contacted me was a nursing head-hunter that could not find any new-grad positions in Massachusetts. She suggested I call her when I’m open to relocating! I’m heartbroken. For years my goal was to be a nurse in Boston (the city I love) and now, after all that work, I’m unemployed and listening to people tell me over and over again “Oh, you’ll get a job. Isn’t there a nursing shortage?”
You might have more luck looking in Brockton or even in Providence. Go ahead and apply in Boston, but also look west of the Easton/Boston area. Good Luck!

Thanks Amy – that is discouraging, but in a way makes me feel better. I was beginning to wonder if there was something going on with my resume that made me an unlikely candidate. Of all the places, my husband has to get a job in an area with really bad prospects for nurses! At least one of us is employed! I hope that your search improves, and I will definitely expand my search area.
