I just found out that I was chosen to go to Ecuador with my nursing class this summer. I am ecstatic, but suddenly realize that I need to learn Spanish, pronto! I have a basic understanding/vocab, but am severely lacking in medical terminology. I was looking through the books and CDs on-line, but would love some advice/recommendations before shelling out $$ to buy one! Anyone have any of these books/CDS that you would recommend? It's not a necessity, but I know a basic understanding of Spanish will help my trip be more meaningful.
Gracias!

I have a lot of experience in medical Spanish and conversational. I speak Spanish a lot in my personal life as well. The best book/CD set I have come across I got at Barnes and Noble and it is called “McGraw-Hill’s Spanish for Nurses.” It is excellent. The CDs are awesome. It should also prepare you well enough so that you can be certified.

Borders book store carries a Spanish-English medical pocket guide that may be invaluable in the field. It is about $20. Barnes and Nobles most probably carries one also. Good luck in Ecuador!

Thanks for the advice! I ordered that McGraw-Hill book/CD set from Amazon and bought a pocket sized medical English-Spanish dictionare (that has already come in handy during my clinical rotation! Tampa has a LOT of Spanish speaking people)

I’m a Wisconsin Spanish teacher writing a series of books with shortcuts to Spanish. My latest Ahora Hablo! Medical Edition, “Simple Steps to Communicate with Spanish-speaking Patients” might be just what you are looking for!

Hi all,
I went to a school years back in Costa Rica. It was the best experience I ever had, especially, living with a family and learning Medical Spanish. I spent three weeks there, and took an intense immersion program. I went with this company called Spanish for Medical.

I plan to do another rotation, maybe this time in South America.
