Well, you will have to apply and complete a RN program. Try to get an internship in Labor and Delivery or the NICU during your time in school. Otherwise it can be difficult to find a place who will hire you fresh out of school. Sometimes they require a few years of experience. It depends though.
It depends on where you live. In BC, after completing your rn program, you usually need 1-2 years experience. then you have to take a neonatal nursing specialty from BCIT (1 prerequisite course and then 3 months schooling full time) and then you can practice. some of the nursing schools will let you do your prerequisite course in your rn program and then with hospital consent you could go right into the nicu program when you’re done your rn program. i love working in the nicu! good luck!
Thank you so much for this topic and the responses to the question. This is the area of nursing that I wish to go into when I finally do obtain my BSN. I have found it so incredibly difficult to be accepted into a nursing program here in Tennessee where I currently reside-I currently hold a bachelor of science in biology, with a minor in chemistry. This is a wonderful website, I have learned so very much since joining it. Thank you
Hi,
I have one more year left of nursing school, and this summer I made a point to find an externship in the NICU. At the unit I work on, GN’s only get hired if they’ve had a position like mine or some other kind of NICU experience (like working as a nurse tech). Otherwise, you’d have to get some experience on another floor before they’d consider you. Hope this helps!
I am a NICU nurse in NY. I’m not sure how it is for other areas but I started as a new grad. I was surprised that they hire new grads but one of the nurses told me that most units love hiring new grads because they have not yet picked up “bad habits” from working in other units. Nothing will prepare you for the NICU except for the NICU. I know most nurses will say “don’t specialize, work a year on med-surg first, gain more experience, etc” but I hated med-surg in nursing school and I had no desire to take care of adult patients. I really love being in the NICU. If the NICU is what you want then you should go for it.
I am a new grad and NICU has always been my area of highest interest. In my job search I ran into a few difficulties finding a NICU job that would hire a new grad. But I did happen to have an internship in an NICU which really helped me in gaining experience and in the end getting me a job. So go after any experience you can! Secondly, don’t be discouraged. I had a lot of people criticize me about going after a specific unit; they wanted me to go after a more general adult unit first. But if NICU is where you want to be, go for it. You may not have a long list of possiblities, but the jobs are out there. Lastly, look a lot of hospital have some type of new grad program or intership, they’re a great way to get into the NICU. Start looking early because positions will fill up. Good luck!
Hi! I am a student. This upcoming summer is the summer before my sr year of my BSN program. I would like to have an internship over the summer in the NICU, but I’m having trouble finding one. Does anyone know of a student nurse NICU internship for next summer? Thanks!
