New Graduate Job in Northern NJ

Does anyone have any advice for a new graduate RN, related to finding a job in northern NJ?
I keep getting promised that a particular job will be given to a new graduate when I apply, but in the end, they give it to an experienced nurse. While I did well at school (3.6), graduated with High Honors, passed my exit exam and NCLEX easily and have good recommendations - I have no way to compete with someone who has experience.
There have been hospital closings and the market seems to be flooded with out of work experienced nurses.
I can't move; my husband, who is solely supporting the family, has a job that is not mobile.
What else can I do? Are there other places I can get some experience?

Hi Aimee! I’m going to be a new grad as of December of 2008. I’ve been searching around so here’s some advice!
Clara Maass in Belleville has been expanding due to the HUGE influx of patients since the West Hudson and Columbus closings. They actually have a listing on their website for general RN positions stating how they have a need.
Also, check out UMDNJ in Newark (where one of my buddies has been hired), and Newark Beth Israel Medical Center. Besides this, I think it’s time you start looking at commuting to NYC or further away. I have a bunch of friends that have had issues finding jobs, but they have found them. Besides hospitals, maybe try non-conventional places like doctor’s offices? I know it sux, but it’s something to hold you over! Also, Loving Care Agency is hiring as well. They’re MORE than willing to hire new grads. They’re desparate. St Joseph’s in Paterson and Wayne is also good for hiring new grads. Good luck!

Hi Aimee… I just graduated in June and I got a job at Bergen Regional. I have found that you really have to go down to the HR’s and talk to them face to face. If you just email your resume it’s going to get lost in their files. If you have a great personality you need to show them! Most employers (from what they told me) look to see how much you want to work for them. So go in there and be aggressive. Bergen Regional likes to hire new grads.. and it’s not all psych it is a regular hospital too. Chilton is hiring new grads, and so is hackensack. Good luck! I know it’s hard.

I have a year and a half experience. My best advice to you is to go to a large teaching hospital, even if you have to commute. They will have the infrastructure to support you as a new nurse, be willing to take you on without experience and benefit your learning objectives that will make you even more marketable after you get your experience.

There seems to a tight job market for even expeienced nurses. I am an experienced nurse with critical care experience and advanced degrees –most often I hear from agencies for travel nurses.

Despite the nursing “shortage”, I am finding it tough to find a position.
