Hello,
I am a nursing student with no hospital work experience (just clinicals) who just got a job as a nurse tech in a local hospital. I had heard that nurse techs make around $11/hr so I was surprised when they offered me $9.22/hr! It is for days (weekend and night differential is available)
I was just wondering what others make/made as a nurse tech? I live in a city and this is a large hospital.
Thanks!
JoEllen

JoEllen,
I went to nursing school at the University of Maryland and worked as a nursing student at the University of Maryland Medical Center in Baltimore. Right before I started working, the paid was increased from $12/h to $15/h. I definitely think you should be making more than what they offered you. Hope this helps!

I went to nursing school right outside of Baltimore, MD and my starting salary was $11.50. This was actually fairly low compared to many other area hospitals. After my first year of school was completed, my pay increased to $13.50.
There is also a shift differential of $1.50 for evenings, 1.50 for nights and 1.75 for weekends.
So for instance, if I worked an weekend, I got my $13.50 + 1.50 + 1.75.
Bottom line – $9.22 is on the low end. Don’t be afraid to say “I’ve done my research and other area hospitals are offering XYZ.”
If it is at a great place where you will learn a lot, go for it. It’s about the experience, not the $$.

I just graduated nursing school, and I worked as a nurse tech until I passed NCLEX. I made 12.42 and I live in Georgia. I would do more research about what other hospitals are offering in your area.

It really is very much dependent on what part of the country you are in.
In the South, all wages are lower than everywhere else. Check with nurse techs in other hospitals in your area or call the HR department and ask.

Hey just an update — I took the low paying job and am so glad I did! On my unit techs do a LOT and I am learning so many wonderful skills such as straight cathing, blood draws, foley insertion, D/C IVs and foleys, MRSA/VRE swabs, hemacult tests, etc etc etc. My friend works at another local hospital making $12/hr as a tech (I make $9.22) and all she is allowed to do is vitals and bed baths. Plus the nurses have really taken me under their wing and always come get me when doing interesting procedures. PLUS I get to float to interesting places like the CCU and ER! So, ultimately, $$ isn’t everything, experience is priceless and I am glad I took the job 🙂

JoEllen…I know your post was over 2 years ago but I was wondering what city was the facility in that offered you $9.22 an hour for the nurse tech position? I was offered that same amount and am wondering if I was getting ripped off? LOL
