Nursing in Missouri with a Misdemeanor

I have a BS in business along with an MBA. I am considering switching to the nursing profession. In order to do so, I will have to complete a 1 year advanced RN program since I already have an undergraduate degree.

However, I do not want to go back to school if I cannot obtain a license and get hired by a decent hospital. I may not be able to obtain a license due to an issue back in 2002 (I was a freshman in college) when 11 boys attacked me. I pulled out a friends registered handgun that was near me to cause the guys to flee.

Well the idea worked, but I was arrested along with most of the guys and charged with "attempted unlawful use of a weapon" as the firearm was not registered in my name. The charge is a misdemeanor. It has not stopped me thus far from getting a job in "Corporate America", but I do know that since I last applied for a job 3 years ago, the guidelines in most companies have become very strict.

The field of nursing in particular seems to have very strict guidelines. I spoke with a lawyer and only arrest records, not convictions, can be expunged in the state of Missouri. I also called the state board and they said usually assault and drug related charges are the only questionable crimes that are heavily researched, but they cannot give me a guaranteed answer. They also cannot attest to whether I will be hired after receiving a license. Do you think that it is worth trying?

you usually have to have an undergraduate degree in a health related profession or a background in health care in order to enter an advanced RN program. For instance LPN, EMT surgical technician, Paramedic, etc. This does not apply to general education, or business degree, even if you have a MBA. Good luck.

You should consider talking with someone at the State Board of Nursing in your state. You could tell them of the situation and ask the probability of this incident excluding you from licensure. Although they will NOT give you a definitive answer, sometimes you will get some guidelines that will help you make an informed decision. In some states the State Board will hear the case of the applicant and then make a decision. Check with your State Board of Nursing.

I also recommend looking under the “rn with misdemeanor drug conviction” under visitor topics. I had a conviction myself and gave my story under this post.
