I am a senior nursing student graduating in May and I have just discovered that I am pregnant. My husband and I are shocked - this will be a "pill" baby!Anyway, my question pertains to new graduate job positions. Most of them are full-time and I am not planning to work full-time once the baby is born. How do I go about getting a job? Should I disclose that I am pregnant? What kind of facilities might be more prone to offer part-time work to a new grad?

Lindsey,
First of all, congratulations on your pregnancy! I hope it’s an easy one for you as you finish up school.
My one suggestion for a job is to look at clinics. They may not pay as much, but the hours are much better and you can often find part time. I work in a Family Practice office (and have for 20 years) and love it. We hire new grads all the time.
Best wishes as you wrap up your degree and start your new life as mom and nurse!

When are you due? If it is not until late summer you should be able to get your orientation done and work full time until you are done training and then once you are off orientation you can work part time. It is just hard as a new grad to orient part time because it will take a long time.
You probably won’t have the best benefits with maternity leave but it will all work out.
I think as a new grad it is good to start on the floor in a hospital because you will really learn a lot that first year.

Congrats!! I graduated in 2006 and I work as a high risk OB nurse. I am not pregnant, but when I first started there were 8 pregnant nurses. I know we have a girl on orientation now who is pregnant. I guess what I am trying to say is that when you are looking for a job look for flexibility in a boss. (right now our nurse manager is pregnant with a high risk pregnancy which makes her more willing to compromise!!) Enjoy your pregnancy and the end of nursing school!!

You could always get an abortion.
