i have applied as a experienced nurse in illionois and have foundit hard to find a job. i dont understand why either. but i suggest as i did you go somewhere else, apply for licensure in ia it is a compact state, this allows you to work in 14 other states without applying for licensure in each states. they say there is a nursing shortage but what it really is is that the jobs are out there but the shortage is in hiring. i know personally these hospitals do hire new grad. they all do. just keep trying but try somewhere else you will make more money and wont be so cold in the winter.

Apply at Advocate Good Samaritan Hospital in Downers Grove. They have a 12-month New Grad RN Residency program, which I began, and coordinated for 3 years. (check out the article I wrote here on RealityRN.com, at “Managing Careers”. The article is called “The New Model of RN Orientation.”)
Competition is very stiff, but it has been very successful in increasing job satisfaction for the RNs, and producing a higher level of skill attainment, faster. Check it out on their Career website.

Hey Megi! I feel your pain as well. I’m a new grad taking my NCLEX next week, and I haven’t found a job either. I live in NJ, and this area is awful for jobs. Only one of my classmates out of 20 has actually found a job. I know some of us are moving to PA, because hospitals there are actually still hiring new grads.
My best advice to you is to look outside of the Chicago area. When you go to the less densely populated areas, you also go to areas with a smaller workforce, and less nursing schools. Sure, you may have to move further away from your area for a year or two, but then you can move back to the Chicago area. Places are more likely to take you with a year or two of experience.
Best of luck and hang in there!!

It just depends on what state you’re in. There is a nursing shortage without a doubt, but not every area is affected by it. I’m in Oklahoma and most new grads I know didn’t have trouble getting in. I’m thinking of moving to Indiana when I’m done with school, and so far the hospitals I’ve researched there require a year of experience, but my brother-in-law’s sister got an awesome job in Indianapolis right after graduation, so there must be some exceptions.

I spent 10 months looking for a job here in IL, and have 4 years of experience. It’s hard to find a job here in the Chicago area. I definitely didn’t feel the nursing shortage here!!!
As for new grads, the two hospitals I’ve worked at in this area encourage new grads to apply. Some hospitals have a New Grad Residency Program. These are great programs! I wish I had the opportunity when I graduated nursing school to take part in one, but the first hospital I worked didn’t have one.
Good luck to you!!!

I am with you. I had a hard time finding a job in NW Florida. No one would meet with me because I’m a new grad! Eventually I got an interview and the woman offered me a job in Pediatrics but it was a lot harder than I thought. Just be persistent!
