I graduated in May 2007 and I am starting to repay student loans... and they are ALOT! 600+ a month. I work in pittsburgh, PA and i was wondering if anyone knows of any organization or any kind of help to decrease my student loans? i know that there are sign on bonus, which i got but 4000 dollars doesnt go very far! or do you know if any hospital is willing to help pay a percentage of a loan in return for your service for 2-5yrs?
i would appreciate any information!

Wow how much did you borrow?
Well there is something called NELRP its a gov program to help with loans (nurse education loan repayment program) it is based on debt to income ratio- you would be a good candidate

If i only knew what i know now… it was not a smart move on my part, but i was young 18 at the time and i wanted to go to REAL college. very dumb. but thank you so much for your help, I REALLYYYYY appreciate it!

I’m in almost the same boat. Are you having a very difficult time? I don’t graduate until 2010,is it feasible to pay back on a nurses salary?
You can have solace knowing that you’re not the only one.

You can pay that amount if you are living with someone or at home. I live with my fiance so our bills are split in half. plus RN’s get paid differently in different states due to cost of living changes. It is doable but i have to be careful with what i spend. its hard to do sometimes. it gets overwhelming. i worked really hard for this degree and sometime it just sucks that i can’t enjoy the money i earn. but it was my fault! so i can’t complain. Just save save save!!!! it helps and if you can in any way right now start repaying now!
it will help trust me!

Have you tried contacting your lender? Many have income-sensitive repayment plans, and are willing to work with you to ensure they get their money back!
Good luck

I don’t know how it is where you are, but Texas has a government program called the “nurse loan repayment program”. It has qualifications, such as working at a non-profit hospital, indiginent care hospital, indian reservation, VA hospital, etc…
i haven’t looked into it 100% like how much they pay back, but I do know you have to have signed a contract with your hospital for 2 years or more.
Might want to look into something like that

Hi Amanda,
I am in the same situation as you. I attended a private college with the same tuition that you had. It felt like you were telling my story. Don’t feel you made a bad decision. It’s merely the difference between state and private colleges. With state colleges having much lower tuition, there is often a long waiting list to get into the program. At least that was my experience. I could have waitied a year or two to get called for a spot or I could have gone to private college.
With that said, I too was looking for ways to get assistance with reducing my loans. I don’t know what state you live in but what I did was put “nursing tuition forgiveness” in my search engine an I found that there were many tuition forgiveness proograms with different requirements to qualify. Maybe you can find them near you too. Good luck to you!

I too am in that situation and am having a VERY difficult time. I am divorced with 2 kids and so I had to take out additional loans just to suuport my children while I was in school. My loans are about 800.00 a month and I am having to borrow from peter to pay paul so I am right there with you. Good luck to you.
