As a preceptor, i would like to know what my orientees would want during their orientation week--what they feel they can learn from the most.

Find out where I am in my knowledge and skill base. Ask me a whole lot if I have any questions. Let me feel comfortable asking you any question I have. Always be easy to find – tell me where you are at in case I need you. Explain tasks as you do them. Allow me to teach you things I know because there are things I am good at and things I may know that you don’t. Being open, available, supportive, and non-judgmental will provide an environment of safety and trust that will allow you and your mentee to grow and learn. Please… do not have my running to go and get things. Sometimes just getting juice can be frustrating because I do not know the floor as well as you and I feel like an idiot when I can’t do such simple tasks.

I think the most important thing is a preceptor who has good guidance and support skills almost like a counsellor- the worst possible thing is to make the orientee feel unconfident or as thought you are intimidating them in anyway this could be through body language, facial expressions or the way you speak to them. Appreciate the things they are strong in and work on building their strength in weaker clinical areas. Introduce them to as much staff that you think will also be helpful to their growth as possible and give them a good indepth tour of the unit so they are not fumbling looking for simple things all these tiny things lead to a great deal of stress. Understand that an orientee has worked very hard to get to where they are and remember that you were where they were at some point in your career. You do not have to be friends with your orientee but you are definately their gaurdian so to speak into the nursing profession.
