I'm a junior in a BSN program. As you all know, nursing school is no piece of cake. My family and loved ones say their supportive and want me to do my best!I study all the time and try my hardest to balance my school work & free time. So why do they look at me like i'm crazy when i tell them, I can't do this or go there b/c I have to study. It's like I can't get them to understand that i'm not being a baby or over reacting when i cry b/c I make a C on a test I studied so hard for. Their response " all you do is study, think you could have made an A?" I wouldn't trade where I'm at for the world!! I just know NO ONE understands what we go through. How can i get them to see it?

Hanna,
I am also a junior in a BSN program. I live with my boyfriend and he doesn’t understand why I cry over a B either. But i have learned and so has he, that he has to let me have my little meltdowns in the privacy and safety of our home. I offer you this advice: unless people have been through a nursing program, they won’t understand. Try to vent to your fellow students for support and turn to friends and family for other, non-nursing related support needs. Any rate, good luck and let’s hope that May 2009 comes quickly and with our sanity intact!

I’m completing my last semester of a BSN program. None of my friends understood why I was always MIA or striving for a A when a B would suffice in their eyes. Realistically everyone will not understand the struggle us “future” nurses will endure to fulfill our dreams. My mother is a nurse and she at times does not understand my obsessive compulsiveness over my grades. Sometimes in nursing, we provide support to patients without being able to fully put ourselves in the patients shoes or completely understand the extent of the situation. The same applies with your family members and you. Have them do favors for you which will support you even though they might not understand what your struggle and what it’s all about.

Nurses are the front line of healthcare and are utterly essential. The shortage is a world wide problem and you can help. There is a new social network, being pioneered by Shawn D. Mathis, that is designed to supply nurses with everything they need and to help them keep in contact with one another. It’s worth checking out. http://www.mynursebook.com

The only people that will understand are those who have been there…and even then, they are not YOU, so everyone sees things differently. I agree, the best place to find comfort is with another student.
