When should I apply for my first RN job?

I am a senior nursing student with a little over one semester left. When should I apply for a RN/BSN job? Do I wait until I take boards? Do I apply now, even though I am not a nurse yet?

You should have applied yesterday… Some hospitals are not taking applications until you pass boards but you should make contact with the manager of the department you want to work, and think of every interaction with staff as a potential job interview and tell those people that is where you want to work. Despite the ongoing nursing shortage, funds for training Nurse Graduates is meager and quality hospitals and positions are competitive. Good Luck!

Good luck with that. Being as the economy is in the pits, hospitals have had huge cutbacks. I grad in april 09 and spent 6 months waiting on an opening, and I was licensed in august. I would at least start looking and if you get an oppertunity JUMP on it. I was more worried about passing my NCLEX then obtaining a job because we had my hubbys income. Employers look for experience while in school and those are the ones that get hired on. trust me, I learned the hard way. Oh and for goodness sake DO NOT start in a nursing home, it is not a good place for a new RN. see my post on that and youll see why.
